Training on Data Journalism
PAN is collaborating with the South African Agency for Science and Technology Advancement (SAASTA) to run data journalism workshops for emerging journalists and program managers from community media houses across SA.
Data journalism workshops
PAN has been working with SAASTA since 2019 to host regular training workshops. These workshops introduce journalists and programme managers to the principles of data journalism as well as some of the key practices and tools they can use for constructing data-supported stories for their audiences. The workshops are based on content adapted from the core TrainUp curriculum developed by OpenUp, which has been used to train data storytellers working at many of South Africa's largest media houses.
SAASTA Youth Journalism Programme
The PAN collaboration with SAASTA is taking place through its groundbreaking Youth Journalism Programme. This programme aims to communicate science and technology stories in all the South African indigenous languages and to promote interest in science and technology amongst the disadvantaged youth. It strives to ensure that scientific information is accessible to all South Africans. See the SAASTA website for more information.
