Training on Data Storytelling
On 28-29 November 2019 PAN collaborated with the South African Agency for Science and Technology Advancement (SAASTA) and TrainUp to run a two-day training on data storytelling for journalists and program managers from community media houses.
SAASTA Youth Journalism Programme
The PAN collaboration with SAASTA is taking place through it's groundbreaking Youth Journalism Programme. This programme aims to communicate science and technology stories in all the South African indigenous languages and to promote interest in science and technology amongst the disadvantaged youth. It strives to ensure that scientific information is accessible to all South Africans. See the SAASTA website for more information.
The pilot training was based on content adapted from the core TrainUp content, which has been used to train data storytellers working at many of South Africa's largest media houses. Some of the TrainUp material has been developed into open content which can be accessed on the website.
PAN is developing a plan with SAASTA to expand the training to other regions of South Africa from July 2020. The aim is to support community media houses across South Africa with access to research and data relevant to their audience needs and interests.
